For the convenience of subscribers, here's my why weekend column explaining why falling inflation expectations falling towards 0% and below is problem for everyone and why the Reserve Bank should care and act.

Core retail sales fell 0.2% in the September quarter as price deflation in most categories combined with weak demand in areas such as clothing and department stores. The deflationary effects of the strong New Zealand dollar, a warm winter and sharp growth in competition from online imports were also cited as factors.


BNZ's consumer trends survey showed little improvement in consumer spending intentions in October and a rise in house price inflation expectations to a record high, while ANZ's Property Investors' survey found 92% expected property values to rise over the next year. Statistics NZ said population growth meant an extra North Island electorate would have to be created at the expense of a list MP.
